Axl Rose in the news again
EX-GUNS N' ROSES DRUMMER DEFENDS AXL
Josh Freese, a renowned rock session drummer who was a member of Guns N' Roses for a period of time nearly 10 years ago, has defended his former boss, Guns frontman Axl Rose, in a new interview with Spinner.com. Freese said about the reclusive, seemingly eccentric singer, "Everyone always baits me to give them a crazy Axl story. I don't really have any. I spent two years in a studio with him (and) I never saw any mood swings. He was never not cool to me. So, I am always quick to defend the guy, even though I know his reality is different than mine. Then again, everyone has a different reality."

I spent two years in a studio with him (and) I never saw any mood swings. He was never not cool to me. So, I am always quick to defend the guy, even though I know his reality is different than mine. Then again, everyone has a different reality."
Freese auditioned for Guns in 1997 despite having a full schedule as one of the music industry's most in-demand session drummers. He explained, "I was pretty busy at the time, so I didn't really need the job necessarily. Then I decided that I should go down there because I wanted to meet him. At the time, no one had seen him for a couple of years and there were all these rumors . . . I went down and I liked him. He wasn't the monster that was painted of him."
- While working with Rose, Freese co-wrote the song that eventually became the title track of the new Guns album, Chinese Democracy, which finally arrived last November after a 17-year wait. The drummer said the song stayed close to the original track he worked on a decade ago.
- Freese left Guns in 1999 to form A Perfect Circle with Tool singer Maynard James Keenan and Ashes Divide guitarist Billy Howerdel. He recorded three albums and toured with that act through 2004.
- He recently completed a three-year stint as the drummer for Nine Inch Nails, departing the band at the end of 2008.
- Freese has also played on dozens of albums by the likes of Evanescence, Staind, the Offspring, Puddle Of Mudd, Devo, Sting, and many more.
- His new solo album, Since 1972, is available digitally at joshfreese.com, with a physical CD arriving in stores on April 14th.
- Axl Rose has a reputation for being one of the strangest, most difficult musicians in the business. Do you think he's gotten this unfairly? Is it wrong for people to talk about him unless they're involved with him on a personal or professional level?
- Josh Freese says Rose is not the monster he's made out to be. Do you believe him, or do you think Freese is just trying not to burn any bridges?
- Has anyone ever spread rumors or gossip about you that was just plain wrong? Did you do something about it or did you ignore it?
